Pearl is a hard material produced from the soft tissues (especially the mantle) of live mollusk shells. When a grain of sand or a parasite enters the shell of an oyster, then the oyster is disturbed. The shell, unable to drive away the invader, produces a smooth hard crystalline substance the margarine (calcium carbonate) around it to protect itself. As long as the invader stays there, the shell continues to produce layers of this substance, until after a few years it is trapped inside a smooth and shiny pearl. Like shells, pearls are composed of microcrystalline calcium carbonate (called pearl), which is deposited in concentric layers. Ideal pearls are round and soft, although they may have other shapes (baroque pearls).
